Uchigen Co., Ltd. Home > Industrial Paint > Wood Coating

We sell paints for musical instruments as well as the consumables such as papers and waxes.

Introduced below is the typical process of wood coating.

Basic process of wood coating consists of surface preparation, coloring, undercoating, wood filling, intermediate coating, top coating and finishing.

Surface preparation Important process before painting.
Smoothing wood surface significantly affects to the coating result of the next processes.
#80 to 180 sand papers would be appropriate for surface grinding.
Coloring We basically try to utilize the most of natural color unique to each wood, but by complementing colors, we make it more beautiful. There are three ways of coloring: wood stain, filling color and coating color.
Wood stain is the way to penetrate dye or transparent pigment in wood material. It is well absorbed in the wood substrate while leaving the substrate mostly visible due to its high transparency. It can make use of material feeling.
Filling color is the way to fill colorant such as dye or pigment added in wood filler in the area close to the cell tissues of conduit, so that good coloring effect can be expected to develop clear vivid colors.
Coating color is the way to color during base coating through top coating by adding dye or pigment in sealer and paint for intermediate coating. As stable coloring is possible, it is the most frequently used in mass production.
Undercoating Purpose of undercoating is to prevent colorant from oozing into the upper coating film and to consolidate the wood fibers to stabilize. Undercoating is required to have good wettability and permeability to wood surface.
Wood filling Purpose of wood filling is to fill the spaces of conduits and fibers of wood substrate to make the coating surface flat and smooth. Water-based and oil-based wood fillers are available. Process consists of Coating → Rubbing in → Wiping-up.
Intermediate coating Purpose is to make the coating film thicker and the surface smoother. We use sanding sealer for transparent finish, and surfacer for opaque one. Both need to have good thickness feeling and high polishing workability. For grinding, #240 to #320 sand paper would be appropriate to prepare flat surface for coating.
Top coating This is the final process to improve the finish appearance for gloss and color. Several types of coating materials are available, including lacquer-based, urethane-based and polyester-based.
Finishing By smoothing the finish coating surface with #400 or higher sand paper and then polishing by buff polishing machine, we can have more glossy and beautiful appearance.
